SOMArts' annual Day of the Dead Exhibition
San Francisco, California
Marin Middle School parent Mike Dingle and art teacher Paul Maes helped the 6th grade class participate in SOMArts' annual Day of the Dead exhibition this year. The exhibition features altars and installations that honor the dead and provide offerings to the living created by a diverse group of artists from around the Bay Area.
As a class, the 6th grade artists discussed what Day of the Dead means and its themes, motifs and traditional symbols. In keeping with the overall theme of the show this year, Honoring Revolution with Visions of Healing, the 6th grade decided to focus on the ecological and human destruction of the Deep Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The kids thought about how they could inspire the people encountering the installation to consider not only the impact of the disaster itself, but the opportunity to use this tragic event to bring about positive change. To that end, the kids designed a sculptural space that incorporates a large oil covered skull at its base, but with new life and new hope blossoming out of it.
Miniature "Gulf Saver" Bags form the border of the exhibit to reflect positive growth within the installation. Behind the skull hang ribbons that the kids have written their own hopes and wishes for the environment on.
